چکیده

A loss of passivity in the face of certain frequency dynamics (eg: high frequency dynamics) given an otherwise passive system leads to the notion of a “mixed” system. A “mixed” system is one that has a concept of small gain associated with it over those frequency intervals where passivity is lost. In this paper, a test for determining “mixedness” for linear, time-invariant systems is provided and several finitegain stability results for interconnections of such systems are presented. The “mixedness” test involves examining the spectral characteristics of two Hamiltonian matrices, one associated with the passive aspects of the system and one associated with the notion of small gain. The finite-gain stability results are derived using a dissipative systems framework.

On interconnections of "mixed" systems using classical stability theory

In this paper, we derive stability results for large-scale interconnections of ‘‘mixed’’ linear, time-invariant systems using classical Nyquist arguments. We compare our results with Moylan and Hill (1978) [8]. Our results indicate that, if one relaxes assumptions on the subsystems in an interconnection from assumptions of passivity or small gain to assumptions of ‘‘mixedness,’’ then the Moylan...

Peaking Attenuation in High-Gain Observers Using Adaptive Saturation: Application to a Ball and Wheel System

Despite providing robustness, high-gain observers impose a peaking phenomenon, which may cause instability, on the system states. In this paper, an adaptive saturation is proposed to attenuate the undesirable mentioned phenomenon in high-gain observers. A real-valued and differentiable sigmoid function is considered as the saturating element whose parameters (height and slope) are adaptively tu...

A test for determining systems with "mixed" small gain and passivity properties

‘‘Mixedness’’ is a property that captures elements of the notions of passivity and small gain. In the frequency domain, a linear, time-invariant system is called ‘‘mixed’’ if, over some frequency bands, it is strictly passive and, over the remaining frequencies, it has a gain of less than one; there exist no frequencies over which the system has neither of the notions of these properties associ...
